Duplex ultrasound is a vascular ultrasound method that assesses both the structure of a blood vessel and the characteristics of blood flow. It can help evaluate vessel patency, possible narrowing, blood clots, and other changes in circulation.
The examination may be ordered for vessels of the head and neck, upper or lower limbs, or other vascular regions depending on the doctor's indication.
- leg pain, heaviness, swelling, or visible varicose veins
- cold limbs, skin color changes, or suspected circulation problems
- dizziness, frequent headaches, or transient neurological symptoms when indicated by a doctor
- suspected vascular thrombosis or narrowing
- the need for vascular assessment in atherosclerosis, diabetes, or cardiovascular risk
- follow-up of a previously identified vascular change
During duplex scanning, the specialist assesses the vessel walls, diameter, patency, and the speed and direction of blood flow. Results are interpreted together with clinical information, and the treating doctor may recommend additional vascular or other tests when needed.
