Ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging method that uses sound waves to evaluate internal organs and soft tissues without ionizing radiation. The scope of the examination depends on the organ or system requested by the doctor.
Ultrasound can be used to investigate symptoms, monitor a known condition, or perform preventive assessment. Preparation instructions vary depending on the type of examination.
- pain or discomfort in the abdomen, pelvis, or another area
- swelling or suspected mass or organ enlargement
- certain urinary or digestive-system complaints
- the need to assess the thyroid gland or other superficial organs
- follow-up of a change found on a previous examination
- a preventive or targeted examination ordered by a doctor
During ultrasound, the specialist evaluates the size, structure, and visible changes of the organ in real time. The ultrasound result is interpreted together with the patient's symptoms, examination findings, and other tests, so it does not always represent a final diagnosis on its own.
